Superintendent's Message
As we move past the disappointing loss of our school’s referendum by 14 votes (517 Yes 531 No) in the November election, the School Board and I will begin our work in January to cut our budget. We will do the best we can to minimize the impact of budget cuts on our students, but it is certain all of us will feel the effects of budget cuts. In upcoming Eagle Feathers e-newsletters, we will keep you informed of what will be affected.
There is good news I would like to tell you about. In November the City of Lake Station and the schools partnered together to collect nonperishable food items and put together Thanksgiving food baskets for families in need. This was a wonderful event our students and staff at all of our schools participated in. We also enjoyed continuing our partnership with Mayor Bill and the city to work together for the benefit of our community.
I often say I like to brag about our wonderful students and staff, and I do. The Edison Student Council is doing a Food Drive and the Edison Honor Society is doing a toy drive for the upcoming holidays. Our students are amazing caring people who want to help others. More information about the food drive and the toy drive can be found in this edition of the Eagle Feathers.
I would like to recognize some people for their hard work and accomplishments. Our Bailey School Spell Bowl Team was awesome again this year. Our students worked very hard to learn the spelling words and prepare for their competition. I also want to thank their coaches Mrs. Scartozzi and Mrs. Ellenberger for their continued dedication to our students. #BaileyEaglesStrong!
Finally, I want to congratulate two of our Edison staff members. Our new Edison Jr. Sr. High School principal Mr. Tom Stoner was elected by other high school principals in the region as District 1 Principal of the Year. “I am honored to receive this award. It means so much to me that my fellow principals chose me for this award. I am grateful and humbled by it,” Mr. Stoner said.
Mr. Drew Deyoung new to Edison this year received the Outstanding Future Social Studies Teacher award from the Indiana Council of Social Studies Teachers. Mr. Deyoung in his first year teaching social studies is doing an amazing job, and we are very proud of him.
Lake Station Community Schools is fortunate to have so many wonderful students, teachers, and staff members. In upcoming issues of the Eagle Feathers e-newsletter, we will feature more of our students and staff. Yes, I want to keep bragging about them to recognize the great things they do. #EaglesStrong.

Christmas Food Drive
Edison Student Council will be collecting non-perishable items for their Christmas Food Drive through December 18. Edison students may bring in their food drive items to your first hour class. The first hour class that collects the most goods will receive a prize!
Holiday Toy Drive
The Edison National Honor Society, in collaboration with Unite4Lily, is collecting new toys for the Payton Manning Children's Hospital in Indy. Please drop off new toys to Mr. Mahar at Edison. The goal is to fill a 10 foot U-Haul truck with toys! Drop off deadline is December 20.
Red Cross Blood Drive
Edison Yearbook students held their annual Edison Blood drive in collaboration with the American Red Cross earlier this month. Thank you to the 25 students and staff who donated. Be on the look out for another Blood Drive in the spring in which students, staff and even parents will be able to donate!
Edison Connections
Each day our teachers at Edison are always trying to find new ways to help students in their classrooms. Whether it be engaging lessons, positive conversations on the side, being in the halls for kids to see during passing period, or even something like what Mr. Welch did in his class recently. Mr. Welch built a rock garden to help a student who needed an outlet for finding their focus during class. This is a great example of a teacher that is in tune with his students and understands what it is they need to be successful. Way to go Mr. Welch! We are proud to have you as part of our Eagle Nation.
